What do they mean?

We see new products on the market and in the store every day. With all these new labels it may be hard to tell what is best for your home and businesses.

Identifying Your Cleaning Products. What do they all mean? Bio-toxic, Non-toxic, & Phosphate-free.

1. Bio-Toxic?

Bio-Toxic cleaners are derived from agricultural products such as corn, soybeans, and even coconuts. Although they are getting more attention today, because of the growing influence of green cleaning in the professional cleaning industry. Many of these early products were designed for consumer use.

2. Non-Toxic?

Non-Toxic cleaners is a largely used marketing term that goes widely unregulated and is used as a marketing buzzword. How can companies use this term? Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) defines a toxic product as one that ‘can produce personal injury or illness to humans when it is inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin. How do they determine this? The CPSC act details that a product must kill half or more of a group of lab rats to be considered toxic.

3. Phosphate-Free?

Phosphate-Free cleaners mean that there are no phosphates. The US has the strongest phosphate regulation, with other countries limiting their use to varying degrees. Some cleaners have phosphates that are considered not harmful to humans, but they are bad for the environment and bodies of water. They accumulate in lakes and rivers, causing devastating algal bloom (‘eutrophication’).

These are just a few things to watch out for while buying your household and business products. We hate to say that the research falls on us as consumers. We recommend you educate by using reputable information and stay informed. With medical conditions on the rise, these things will help you determine what’s best.
